[00:00:17] With an AM Quincy news update for Friday, September 18th. A demolition of the Quincy District Courthouse will be getting underway later this fall to to make way for the new Quincy Justice Center. The state says the demolition of the existing Francis Expellati Courthouse on Dennis Ryan Parkway will begin in late October or early November. The court will be temporarily relocating to a vacant office building at the Crown Colony Office park in West Quincy. During the project, the new justice center will be home to the District Court, district juvenile Court and housing court, with additional space for jury rooms, district attorney offices and a court service center. There will be separate spaces for judges, detainees, attorney client spaces and the public. The $187 million project is slated for completion in the spring of 2030.
[00:01:17] The owner of the President's Plaza on Quincy Avenue in Quincy wants to add three more storefronts to that plaz.
[00:01:25] The California company that owns the property, is seeking permission to add three one story buildings to the existing plaza for additional retail space. During a recent planning board meeting, Ward 2 City Councilor Richard Ashe said the main concern about the proposal is the traffic impacts. Ash also said he supports a plan to create a separate loading zone for the plaza and a requirement that plaza employees park in a designated section of behind the plaza. The Planning board will take up the matter again on November 18. The proposed new retailers have not yet been identified.
[00:02:05] Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch says that he may use Chapter 90 money from the state to pay for the $700,000 renovation of Squaw Rock park in Squantum. Koch's comments come after the City Council raised questions about Koch's previous plan to use revenue from the Quarry Hills lease for that project.
[00:02:27] Project also includes demolishing a building, expanding the parking lot at the Nickerson Post and leasing another building to the Massachusetts Tribe to be used as a meeting space.
[00:02:40] The Mayor's office in the Town of Braintree responding to a report uncovering charges against a police officer accused of harassing his girlfriend with Department D Technology.
[00:02:52] In a statement last night, a spokesperson from the office of Mayor Aaron Joyce wrote that the town of Braintree can confirm that the queries in question are linked to former Braintree Police Detective Mark Sherrick, who retired from the town in April of last year during an investigation by the town into his conduct. The investigation, conducted by a third party, revealed that the former detective misused police resources, including license plate queries, for a personal matter unrelated to a legitimate operational or investigative reason.
[00:03:29] Given that this remains an active criminal investigation, the town will not comment any further. Under the leadership of Mayor Joyce and newly appointed Braintree Chief Robert Kilroy. The town's committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct from police officers.
[00:03:46] 56 year old Sherick is facing a harassment charge and is set to appear in court later this month. Court records accuse him of tracking his girlfriend and her car using a GPS device. A department audit also shows that he used their Flock System more than 1,000 times to track a license plate linked to his ex girlfriend in he is set to appear in court later this month.
[00:04:14] A man was flown to a Boston hospital yesterday after a head on crash in Plymouth left him seriously injured and trapped in his vehicle. The other driver was a 17 year old girl who had fled a well being check in nearby Kingston and tried to run from the crash. Crash was reported just before noon and closed Plimpton Row right near Carver Road and the West Plymouth Square shopping plaza and the car ended up in the median while the SUV that it collided with had front end damage. Plymouth officials say the car's driver, after being extracted from the vehicle, was rushed by ambulance to Plymouth Municipal Airport and then flown to a trauma center in Boston by helicopter. The SUV's driver, a 17 year old girl, had minor injuries. She was treated at a local hospital.
[00:05:07] Kingston police said the family of the SUV's driver, the 17 year old, had requested a well being check on her which led her to driving off in the family vehicle. They believe she did not have a license and was driving erratically. She didn't stop when police tried to pull her over. The pursuit was terminated and then the crash took place. Police say she tried to flee the scene on foot and was taken into custody soon after that.
[00:05:36] Nurses at Boston Medical center voting to authorize a three day strike yesterday, nurses at BMC's main hospital campus, represented by the Massachusetts Nurses association, voted to authorize their bargaining committee to call a three day strike if necessary. The nurses are pushing for a new contract that addresses patient safety, low wages and chronic understaffing.
[00:06:03] 160 nurses voted 94% in favor of authorizing a strike. The vote was held in solidarity with more than 2000 registered nurses represented by 1199 SEIU healthcare workers east, who are also seeking a new contract and held their own strike vote last week. The RN bargaining committee will decide whether to set a strike date based on upcoming negotiations.
[00:06:30] Before any strike could take place, the committee would provide the legally required 10 day notice. Nurses at BMC have been in contract negotiations since May. The next negotiating session has been scheduled for September 28th.
[00:06:48] The House Neck Community Council is hosting their 20th annual Housneck Chowderfest Saturday from 2 to 6pm at the House Neck Maritime Center. Several local restaurants and individuals will be competing for best chowder recipe. Troop 6 will be selling beverages and a bake sale will be held by the House Neck Congregational Church. Proceeds benefit local youth and family programs.

[00:07:33] The Quincy Environmental Treasures program presents the Geology of the Crusher Saturday at 10am with geologist Les Tirala. You can learn about rocks at the site and the marine life in the area. Space is limited to 15 people.

[00:08:59] A check of business news this morning and stocks are higher. The dow is up 316 points, the Nasdaq rose 439 and the S&P is up 85.
[00:09:11] Asian shares mostly rose, the dollar was up, the euro was higher and oil at $103 a barrel and sports High school football returns to QATV tonight. Quincy High School presidents take on the Braintree whomps at 7 o' clock at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy and tomorrow the North Quincy Raiders play the Oliver Ames Tigers at the stadium at 4pm Both games will be live on QATV channels 8 and 1072 and and online at qatv.org Red Sox lost to the Rangers in Texas 4 to 3 last night. They are in Tampa Bay tonight 710 to open up a series with the Rays and of course the Patriots season opener Sunday at 1 o' clock at Gillette Stadium against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
