[00:00:16] I'm Joe Catalano with an AM Quincy news update for Thursday, September 17. While the former Neighborhood Club of Quincy is coming under new ownership, Robert Susi of Quincy purchased the iconic club on Glendale Road last year and plans to reopen it as the Glendale Club. This week, the Quincy Licensing Board unanimously approved the licenses that Susy needs to reopen the venue. Susy told the board that he plans to continue its operation as a function hall for weddings, anniversaries and other private events. Susi said there would no longer be a restaurant at the club and and that private caterers would operate the functions. Responding to concerns about parking and noise, Susi said that the overgrown parking lot would be cleaned up and there would be no outside events at the club. The Neighborhood club opened in 1917, but activity at the club had been falling over the past several years.
[00:01:18] A 60 year old woman was being treated for serious but non life threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Quincy on Tuesday night. Police say the victim was struck on west street near Lyon street in west quincy at about 8pm Tuesday.
[00:01:35] The woman reportedly had just exited an Uber Ride when she was hip. She was taken to a Boston hospital for treatment. The driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The driver told police he did not see the woman. Police say the area is poorly lit. The so far no citations had been issued.
[00:01:57] Authorities are searching for a hit and run driver accused of injuring a 16 year old girl in Holbrook yesterday afternoon. The Holbrook police said the girl was walking home from a nearby bus stop at about 2:30pm near 10 North Shore Road when a vehicle traveled along the shoulder of the road and hit her. The girl rolled over the hood of the vehicle before falling to the ground and she was transported to an area hospital. Her injuries are not considered to be life threatening. Police said the vehicle was only described as black and left the area. A black SUV with its rear hatch open was also reported in the area around the time of the crash, although it's unclear whether that vehicle was involved. Detectives canvassed the scene and are asking anybody in the North Shore Road area who may have surveillance or doorbell camera video to contact the Holbrook Police Department.
[00:02:57] A man charged at a deadly crash at an Apple store in Hingham has been cleared to stand trial. The 2022 crash killed 65 year old Kevin Bradley of New Jersey and left 22 others hurt. Bradley Rhine was arrested after the crash charges against him and include second degree murder, motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, 18 counts of aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, four counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and reckless operation of a motor vehicle. During a court appearance yesterday, Ryan was said by a clinician to be competent to stand trial. His attorney pushed for testing after he failed a Breathalyzer test last month in violation of his probation, which she said was related to her client's use of mouthwash. The prosecution said Ryan should have known better, as he warned against using any alcohol containing products. His defense attorney argued that it could be a sign of memory loss. The judge determined Ryan is competent to stand trial but acknowledge competency is not static and can change.
[00:04:15] He said he's trying to keep the trial on track to start in January and asked the defense to be timely in presenting any new information about his condition. Ryan was behind the wheel of his 2019 Toyota 4Runner when it crashed through the front glass window of the Apple store on November 21, 2022. First responders found workers and bystanders administering first aid to the victims, several of whom were badly injured.
[00:04:46] Drivers are feeling the impact of high gas prices across the country, but filling up the tank is just one of several factors making it increasingly expensive to own a car. From repairs and maintenance to insurance and fuel, the cost of vehicle ownership has climbed sharply in recent years, according to a new analysis from aaa. The average cost to own and operate a vehicle has climbed from around $805 per month five years ago to more than $1071 a month today.
[00:05:23] Heather Long, chief economist for Navy Federal Credit Union, agrees with that assessment in its analysis, showing car repair costs have increased 73% since January 2020. Repair bills are only part of the increases. Rising insurance, maintenance and gas prices are all adding to the overall cost, analysts say. Gas prices typically begin to decline in the fall, but that's not happening right now, adding another expense for drivers already facing higher costs across the board. The average price for a gallon of gas in Massachusetts was hovering around $4.36 per gallon yesterday.
[00:06:09] Now Quincy will mark the 239th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. Today, the city will participate in Bells Across America in Quincy center with some speeches and the ringing of the bells of the United First Parish Church. Today's event begins at 3:30 with remarks by Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch and Quincy historian Bob Damon. Reenactors portraying Ben Franklin and Betsy Ross will also participate, and attendees will receive complimentary bells and patriotic keepsakes. September 17th has been designated as Constitution Day, as proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1955. The bells of the church will ring for one minute at 4pm The Dorothy Quincy Hancock Chapter is hosting the event. The City of Quincy is the sponsor.
[00:07:07] Tonight is the Friends of the Blue Hills Annual Celebration. The event, called the Great Escape, is being held at the Irish Cultural center in Canton from 6 to 9pm Celebration includes entertainment, food, a cash bar, a silent auction and raffles. The event is the major fundraiser for the nonprofit organization that works to protect and preserve the Blue Hills Reservation.
[00:07:37] A check of business news this morning and stocks are down. The Dow lost 631 points, the Nasdaq dropped 3 and the S&P fell 33. Asian stocks were mixed after Wall street closed lower following the Federal Reserve's interest rate hike decision for the first time in three years. The dollar fell, the euro was up and oil at $104 a barrel and sports Red Sox lose in Texas again, 7 to 3 to the Rangers. They'll wrap up the series tonight at 8. O5.
