[00:00:16] I'm Joe Catalano with an AM Quincy news update for Tuesday, October 13th. A Quincy contractor is facing charges that he pushed a 69 year old woman to the ground during an anti ice rally on nantucket in July.
[00:00:33] 62 year old Lee Kennedy, CEO of Lee Kennedy Construction, is charged with assault and battery on a person over 60 and disorderly conduct. A report in the Boston Globe says Kennedy pushed the woman who was participating at a rally on South Beach Street. Police say Kennedy admitted that he pushed someone. The woman was treated at the scene. Kennedy faces a pretrial hearing on November 17. The rally was organized by Indivisible Nantucket, which has held numerous protests against the Trump administration.
[00:01:09] A state trooper accused of beating an off duty trooper had a Quincy waterfront restaurant will be arraigned in December. 40 year old Christopher Regan of Quincy appeared in court last Friday.
[00:01:23] In September, a judge agreed that Regan met the criteria for the BRAVE act. It allows veterans charged with certain first time offenses to enter a VA approved treatment program instead of facing prosecution, according to investigators. Officers responded to the real House Marina Bay on June 26 shortly before midnight after a 911 caller reported a man had been punched in the face and knocked unconscious. When officers arrived, a man was holding ice to his face, but declined to provide details about what happened and refused transport to the hospital. He Investigators later learned that both the alleged victim and the accused were state police employees. Police say a video of the incident began circulating on social media.
[00:02:11] Witnesses told investigators Regan appeared increasingly agitated during an evening out with his colleague and a woman who was sitting between them at a bar. A bartender told police the two men initially appeared to be having a normal conversation, but tension escalated shortly before the alleged assault. Bartender said she saw Regan get out of his chair and punch the other trooper in the head multiple times with a closed fist. She told police the victim appeared unconscious for about two minutes after falling from his chair.
[00:02:43] Investigators reviewed surveillance video and reported it showed Regan pulling the victim from his chair before striking him about five times in the head.
[00:02:52] Police said he appeared unconscious as staff and patrons rushed to help. A bar employee who called 911 told police he observed the aftermath of the altercation and said the trooper suffered severe facial swelling and was bleeding from the mouth. Regan's lawyer said he has completed a 30 day inpatient program and is currently in an intensive outpatient program. He's scheduled to be arraigned on December 11th.
[00:03:20] The new Squantum Elementary School in Quincy is more than halfway complete. The latest construction update says the project has now surpassed the 50% construction completion milestone and remains on schedule to be returned to the city on June 30th of next year. Crews are turning their attention to the interior of the new building by installing the major systems, drywall and ceilings. The new school is being attached to the original 1919 portion of the building, which is also being restored. Students are attending classes in modular classrooms adjacent to the construction site.
[00:04:01] Stop and Shop's website and app were taken offline yesterday after the supermarket chain experienced a security issue with its network.
[00:04:11] In a statement, the company says as a result, the website and app are not available at this time, but they are working as quickly as possible to restore them. In the meantime, all Stop and Shop stores, pharmacies and fuel stations are open and serving customers during normal operating hours.
[00:04:32] Nobody was injured on Friday afternoon as a large truck crashed right through the wall of a building in Braintree. This happened at a Wood Road commercial building the that houses Widowmaker Brewing company And Pure Hockey. Both were evacuated after the crash, but the brewery served customers on a patio outside on Friday night. Fire officials said. The truck involved was a large mobile generator that was being used by a nearby metal manufacturer. The brakes on the truck failed. Debris surrounded the truck after the crash. The building was left with a wide hole extending nearly to the roof. Truck was removed from the building at about 10 o' clock Friday night before it was towed out. The Norfolk County Technical Rescue Team explained that there was a possibility that part of the front of the building would have to come down in the process. Afterward, the frame of the building, supported by cribbing, appeared to remain in place. Instead of shutting down, the brewery brought the beer outside and still drew a crowd of customers.
[00:05:36] A man died after being shot by police in Stoughton near a busy pub early Saturday morning. Investigators say he was trying to hit people with his car. The Norfolk County DA's office said there were multiple 911 calls at about 12:30am about a possibly armed man outside a Monk street bar. Officers responded and encountered the man, who was ultimately shot by police during the encounter. Police said the man was taken to the hospital where he later died. He's now been identified as 32 year old Salahuddin Yagoob and police said he did not have a known address. No other injuries were reported. The shooting remains under investigation. Stoughton police said anyone with any information should contact them.
[00:06:25] An investigation is underway after the death of a man who came in contact with the electrified third rail along the MBTA Red Line. The man was trespassing on the right of way when he contacted the third rail, according to T police. It was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials stressed the incident was not related to MBTA work. Emergency activity was seen near Conley street in Dorchester because officials said that location provided the best access for first responders.
[00:06:58] The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. The man's identity was not released.
[00:07:05] Cohasset police are investigating a hoax hostage incident that prompted a large police response. According to police, officers received a call about 6:30 Sunday evening from a man claiming he was barricaded inside a closed jewelry store on Route 3A with two hostages at gunpoint. The caller claimed he had a pistol and a rifle and demanded money in exchange for the hostages safe release. Upon arrival, Police closed Route 3A in both directions between the Scituate town line and Beechwood Street. Police said the caller remained on the phone with dispatchers and appeared to be watching officers arrive, accurately describing their locations and movements. He also provided details about employee only areas inside the jewelry store. Police contacted the business owner, who confirmed that she and her family were safe. Employees were also contacted and confirmed to be safe. Officers eventually entered the business and conducted a tactical sweep, finding no one inside and no evidence of a hostage situation. No injuries were reported.
[00:08:16] Investigators later determined that the caller had apparently gained unauthorized access to the business's video surveillance system, allowing him to remotely watch the police response in real time. Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley said incidents like this, commonly referred to as swatting, put officers and the public at risk and divert emergency resources. The investigation remains ongoing.
