[00:00:16] I'm Joe Catalano with an AM Quincy news update for Monday, March 2nd.
[00:00:22] A man was being treated for a stab wound after a domestic incident in Quincy yesterday.
[00:00:28] Police say a man was stabbed at the single family home at 354 Quarry Street. At about 5pm the victim was taken to the hospital but is expected to survive. Police were seeking an arrest warrant for a suspect, however, no further details are available.
[00:00:46] The Quincy City Council will meet tonight at City hall after being rescheduled from last Monday night due to the blizzard. The Rules Committee will meet at 6:30 to discuss an order establishing public participation participation procedures for City Council meetings. At seven o' clock, the Ordinance committee will discuss a proposal to strengthen the powers of the City auditor and the full council will meet at 7:30 and hear a request from the Mayor's office to approve over $2.6 million to purchase new firefighter gear that does not contain any cancer causing chemicals. The Council is also expected to get an update on snow removal operations from the DPW. The meeting will be live on qatv and qatv.org beginning at 6:30.
[00:01:39] Even though the snow emergency parking ban in Quincy was lifted on Friday, city officials warn that many roadways remain narrower than usual due to the large amount of snow from last week's blizzard. Officials ask that residents park in driveways whenever possible and park on the odd numbered side of side streets to keep roads passable. Crews have been conducting overnight snow removal operations around schools, business districts and major intersections.
[00:02:13] Almost seven years after a redline train derailed, damaging a signal bungalow near the JFK U Mass Station in Dorchester, work is finally getting underway to fully modernize the signal system, MBTA General Manager Phil Ang told the MBTA Board of Directors meeting last Thursday at the work to fix the damaged signal system was never fully completed. The derailment happened several years before Eng took over. The T advocacy group Transit Matters said the delay in work has impacted the way the Red Line has been functioning and that the previous administration didn't complete the job. Starting this past Saturday, the TEA began a four phase project at night that will impact the Ashmont and Braintree branches. When complete, there will be a new digital signal system which the T said will improve reliability and allow for more frequent trains.
[00:03:14] But while the work is going on, riders can expect longer travel times and a reduced number of trains over the next two months between 8pm and the end of service every night until the end of April. The goal is to get the work done before the World cup comes to the Boston area this summer Massachusetts lawmakers reacting to the United States attacks on Iran on Saturday, the US And Israel launched the operation against Iran in the early morning, hours after President Trump had been threatening the country to make a deal about its nuclear program. Trump released a video where he called on the Iranian citizens to stay inside for the time being, but, quote, when we are finished, take over your governments.
[00:04:03] The US Military called the attacks Operation Epic Fury. Iran responded to the strikes with assaults of their own on two US Military bases and Jordan, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Israel. Yesterday, the Pentagon confirmed that three U.S. troops have been killed in the conflict, the first American casualties. Senator Elizabeth Warren, a member of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee, called the strikes dangerous, illegal. Senator Ed Markey said the attacks are unconstitutional and that they were not approved by Congress. Representative Stephen lynch said the strikes will be costly to US Taxpayers and that he worries about troops that are stationed overseas. And Representative Jake Auchincloss said he is ready to work with Republicans in Congress and vote on a war powers resolution to stop hostility with Iran. Until the president asks for permission from Congress.
[00:05:07] TSA agents won't get another paycheck until the partial government shutdown ends. Now the question is if it will impact travel at Logan Airport and other destinations around the country. But in the midst of a partial government shutdown, tens of thousands of TSA screening agents are again working without paying for the second time in recent months. TSA agents received a partial paycheck on Friday.
[00:05:35] That's the last money they're getting until funding gets passed. And this comes just a few months after the 43 day government shutdown last year. The union representing TSA workers said choices may have to be made that could impact staffing levels, leading to longer lines for travelers and even upping. Safety concerns heightened following this weekend's U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. Meantime, the Department of Homeland Security is adjusting to the funding lapse by suspending the Global Entry Program.
[00:06:10] TSA workers will receive back pay if and when lawmakers reach an agreement on DHS funding.
[00:06:20] A check of Business News this morning. And stocks spiraled downward. The Dow plummeted 521% points. The Nasdaq dropped 210 and the S&P lost 29.
[00:06:33] The U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran rattled world markets today. U.S. futures fell more than 1%. Oil prices soared, although gains for defense contractors and oil companies helped limit losses. The price of a barrel of US benchmark jumped 9% to $73 a barrel. The dollar was up. The euro was down.
[00:06:59] In sports, Celtics beat the 76ers 114 to 98. They'll be in Milwaukee tonight at 7:30. And the Bruins will take on the Penguins at home tomorrow night at 7.
[00:07:14] Forecast from the National Weather Service today, sunny and cold, a high of 26 degrees for tonight, cloudy and at a low of 14 tomorrow. Some snow showers in the afternoon, the high of 38. Some snow showers Wednesday morning and then a high of 46.
[00:07:34] And some rain showers on Thursday with a high of 48.
[00:07:38] The marine forecast calling for 1 to 2 foot waves. Northwest winds at 10 to 15, turning westerly at 5 knots. Later today at a high tide at 10:20am Sunrise 6:17 sets at 5:35.
