[00:00:16] I'm Joe Catalano with an AM Quincy news update for Friday, February 6th. Repairs are continuing on A water main break in Wollaston happened near the 80 Clay street senior apartments earlier this week. Quincy DPW crews will be on scene making repairs and Quincy police will be directing traffic around the work zone. [00:00:39] Massachusetts State Education Commissioner Pedro Martinez will be visiting the Southwest Middle School in Quincy today. Officials say Martinez will speak with school leaders from 10 to 11:30 this morning. Members of the Quincy legislative delegation have also been invited to attend. Southwest Middle School and the Beechwood Knoll School were recently recognized by the state as schools of recognition for showing remarkable progress in English language arts and mathematics. Quincy school officials recently visited the State House to receive those honors. [00:01:14] Quincy Commissioner of Natural Resources Dave Murphy says the city will be issuing a survey for dog owners to solicit recommendations on making dog friendly improvements to the city's parks. An online survey will be published soon and a community meeting will be held to discuss the findings, get more feedback and build consensus on potential improvements. Quincy recently built the first dedicated dog park on Quarry Street. A smaller dog park is located at the Kendall Kettle Hole in north Quincy. The survey will search feedback on which parks dog owners currently use, what type of amenities people would like to see, what time of day and which days of the week they're most likely to frequent the parks, whether people prefer trails or play space, and a number of other questions. People will also be provided with the opportunity to offer feedback on both the survey and at the community meeting. The survey will be issued online through the Park Department page on the city's website or or will be available in paper copies at the Parks Department upon request. [00:02:24] A resident from Hingham fell victim to an online scammer claiming to be from Microsoft this week, according to Hingham Police. The resident lost $21,000 in the scheme. Investigators said the victim was online when she received a notification or a pop up message claiming to be from a Microsoft employee along with a phone number to call. The victim called the number and the scammer told the victim that her bank account had been hacked by a Russian gaming or pornography group. The scammer claimed that that fake group had taken $21,000 out of her account and gave her another phone number to call, claiming it was her bank's fraud department. The victim called that number and spoke with another scammer who told her to make a wire transfer to a federal organization to track the suspect and recover her stolen money. The victim sent the scammers a picture of her driver's license per their request, then wired the money. The victim and her family are now working with the victim's real bank to try and recover the funds. Police are reminding the public to never click on pop up boxes or unsolicited ads or emails. Both may contain viruses or install programs that allow scammers access to your computer. [00:03:46] The FIFA World cup games scheduled to kick off at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough this summer could face trouble as town officials are asking the federation to cover nearly $8 million in security costs, according to Foxborough town officials. [00:04:04] At a select board meeting this week, town officials said there is $7.8 million in security costs needed up front. Officials said without the funding, they will not be issued a license for the matches. Foxborough officials say they don't have the funding and shouldn't be responsible for the payment. The World cup is just four months away and is expected to bring in millions of dollars in revenue and travelers from all over the world. Gillette Stadium's already begun preparing the field, replacing the artificial turf with real grass. The World Cup's host committee said they're working closely with FIFA, the stadium and the town of Foxborough to reach an agreement. The licensing deadline is March 17th. [00:04:49] From favorite jerseys to pre game playlists, super bowl week brings out all kinds of lucky rituals in one Hingham neighborhood. That ritual involves a perfectly named street sign, homemade posters and a growing group of kids who believe their photo might just help the Patriots win it all on Patriots Way. Children gathered once again this week for a familiar tradition, posing beneath the Patriots Way street sign while waving signs, chanting and wearing their Pat's gear. The tradition began back in 2017 when the Patriots won the AFC championship, securing a spot in the Super Bowl. Sarah Joseph, a Hingham mother, said that neighbors were looking for a fun way to rally behind the team. A few weeks later, Patriots won the super bowl and what started as a one time photo quickly took on a new meaning. In 2018, the Patriots returned to the super bowl, but the Patriots Way photo just didn't come together that year and the Patriots lost. When the Patriots returned to Super Bowl 2019, the neighborhood didn't take any chances. The same group of kids lined up on Patriots Way with posters raised and jerseys out to recreate the original shot. And yes, the Pats won. The Patriots headed to Super Bowl 60 this Sunday. [00:06:18] The Patriot Way photo is back again this year and the same group of kids gathered noticeably taller for the familiar scene. [00:06:29] The Quincy Animal Shelter will be closed tomorrow in memory of a longtime volunteer and board member Joanne McCarthy of Quincy died recently at the age of 75. McCarthy volunteered at the shelter for more than 20 years and adopted a dog from the shelter. McCarthy also ran several half and full marathons in support of breast cancer research and was an avid Celtics fan. Visiting hours will be tomorrow from noon to 2 at the Keohane Funeral Home in Quincy, and donations in her memory in lieu of flowers may be made to the Quincy Animal Shelter. [00:07:10] A check of business news this morning. Stocks are down, the Dow dropping 592 points. The Nasdaq lost 363 and the S&P fell 84. U.S. futures and Asian stocks are lower, tracking Wall Street's losses. As technology stocks again dragged on markets, the dollar fell. The euro was higher, oil at $63 a barrel. [00:07:36] In sports, the boys and girls basketball teams from Quincy and North Quincy high schools will be playing each other tonight at Quincy High School. The girls teams will play at 5:30 and the boys at 7. And you can watch both games live here on qatv [email protected] also. The Celtics will take on the heat at the garden tonight at 7:30. And as we all know, Patriots are in the Super Bowl Sunday in Seattle, 6:30pm Forecast from the National Weather Service today, cloudy and a high 27 for tonight. Some flurries. Low in the teens. [00:08:17] Snow off and on all day tomorrow. A couple of inches of accumulation, a high tomorrow of 26. [00:08:23] Sunday Partly cloudy, bitter cold with a high of 16. Wind chills below zero and sunny on Monday with a high of 24. [00:08:33] Marine forecast calling for 1 foot waves. North winds at 5 to 10 knots. High tide 2:30pm Sunrise 6:51 sets at 5:04. [00:08:43] I'm Joe Catalano with an AM Quinn Z news update for Friday, February 6th.
